How the stair tread template tool works

The tool is an adjustable beam with a pivoting end on each side. Slide the ends out until they touch the walls or skirt boards, match each end to the wall angle, and lock the knobs. Lift it out, lay it on the tread blank, mark both ends and cut. Because the template records both angles and the full length at once, every step gets its own exact fit, even in old houses where no two walls are square.

Use it for each tread and riser in turn, and mark the step number on every board as you go. The same tool works for shelves between walls, window sills and built-in benches.
